UNIT 3 PROJECT PLANNING

Project Brief

Capture

Task 1

Entails the creation of a project constrained by the umbrella brief, choosing a suitable one that fits it’s confines. When chosen build a plan of the allotted schedule to help manage your time. Listing all of the projects parts. Blog the entire process.

Task 2

Choose the correct assets for the correct engine, if you do not know how to use it learn it. Then begin designing your project with the aid of mind map and mood board idea generation. Compile the results into a workable plan of action. Blog all aspects.

Task 3

Talk about any set backs encountered and how you fixed them. Show how you stayed within the confines of your own plan, telling of any help from your colleagues (peers). Take on board any ideas that may help your project from any peers during the process as well as any personal changes to the set out plan.

Task 4

Blog the entire process. Create a presentation of any key points within the process.

Planning the Project

projectplanning

Basically to plan a project I need a plan. Starting with an idea, projected over an absolute timescale, stick to the plan, and reap the rewards.

Project Execution

At first I struggled to come up with a suitable idea. Our parameters were quite broad which, instead of making it easier, made it more difficult.

With so many choices available, creating a level, creating a scene, a showcase, etc. The only stipulation was to use assets we had previously created. This again has a broad scope, models, blueprints, actors, pretty much anything that can be used within the creation of a game or scene.

Narrowing these down was my first step.

I decided to use a house from an earlier lesson;

and add it to a scene I had been creating in my own time;

2 dock scene wireframe3 Dock scene

I would probably need to expand the scene to accommodate this but that would not be a problem.

There will be more assets I have already created to place in the scene.

These will be inside either of the two buildings and vary widely from ancient objects to modern and will be added to this blog as I import them. Some might need tidying up, or completing properly (the house needs to be labelled properly, expanded inwardly (into rooms) amongst other things)). Once assembled I want to create an interactvie element to the scene. So the player can walk through the scene and interact with the objects. Eventually this could be part of a game (investigation with a story, like zork).

Another stipulation to this project is adding a workable timescale. This appears moot to me as the deadline for the project is in May, giving me roughly three months. This is the only timescale I need to complete a working model. But the course demands a more detailed plan and as I have never undertaken a task like this that will be difficult, it takes as long as it takes.

The obligatory mood boards and mind maps must be created but, as usual, I have devised my plan already without them.

Another stipulation is to blog the entire process. Again as this is already a requirement for the entire course, this is also a moot point.

Mood Board’s

Living Room

Living Room-Staircase.jpg

The living room inspiration is shown in the first picture. I am looking for a free space with wooden furniture and soft furnishings. The room will not be cluttered but wherever there is an item of furniture it will be crowded. Giving little crowded pockets of detail.

The second picture signifies the soft furnishings. Giving a counterpoint to the hard wood surfaces.

The third is a picture I found while compiling the others. Apart from a great use of space it shows the open style room with busy pockets, I love how this nook looks, cosy and comfortable.

Though there is mo hallway in this house I love the functional feel of this one. A dark wood handrail and spindles. Balanced with dark framed pictures , seat and desk, against a bright backdrop, this hall stands out.

Study

The study is a contrast to the living room. Giving an older world feel of quiet contemplative cosiness. The desk and chair, along with the two armchairs, against the backdrop of the wall smothering bookcase makes me feel as if Sherlock Holmes might wander in. The lanterns and fireplace would be used for mood lighting against an old gentleman’s club decor of burgundy. I can almost smell the old books and pipe smoke.

The desk in the final picture was mainly for the modern feel to the room, which would be represented with a pc.

Kitchen

I like my kitchens to be old farmhouse. There is nothing more kitchen inspiring than light wooden furniture with splashes of black pots and pans, brass measuring ware, wooden shelves with sprigs of various herbs, pure white tiles and belfast sinks.

Some strategic lighting would light the work space up. Maybe a small pantry too.

For that modern twist a small laundry room with modern(ish) furnishings, a breakfast bar, and a tv on a wall.

Bathroom

Bathroom

The first modern space in the house. I love the simple dark tiling that fills the first picture. Lit by the candles and the bath panel, as well as some spot lights the room has a warm feel to it.

The second pic is for the walk in shower. Making it a no nonsense cleaning area a shower should be.

The third pic was chosen for the bright lit window, showing the white ceramics off. These would brighten up the dark tiled bathroom nicely.

Bedrooms

Bedroom.jpg

The first is a typical, functional master bedroom, boring but expected.

The second is my favourite the dark walls inspire a deep, fulfilled, sleep. Iespecially like the hidden lighting around the head of the bed, though I could do withoutthe spotlights. Instead I would place a couple of bedside lamps, for that extra lighting while in bed. As for the room two uplights, equally spaced on each of the other three walls, all with a dimmer light giving a twilit feel to the room, almost pulling you into the bed for a long, restful, slumber.

The bunk beds are a nice design for a children’s room. The bunks themselves have a more substantial look than the flat pack fare. With a sturdy staircase and a much classier feel. The rest of the room has a nautical theme which  helps with the style of bunks, they could be off an expensive liner.

The last pic is a prime example of a guest room. Bright and welcoming, while neutral enough for any guest with any tastes, well except for those more extreme people we know.

Mind Map’s

I built a base mind map. Including all of the basic models required for completion of the scene. Smaller models can be created to add a more natural feel to the scene when the base models have been completed.

Unit 3 Mind Map1

Plan View’s

The key to completing any task is in it’s planning. A well laid plan not only helps in keeping the participant(s) on track but also enables the planner to leave the plan to be completed without any further instructions.

This means that in order to complete this task on time I must take into account, not only the aspects within the plan but any outside factors that may encroach it’s completion. As this is a college course I must accept that there are going to be other units running concurrently. This does not even take into account any outside factors, such as illness or any other personal factor.

With this in mind I am aware that my chosen project is a bit busy. To be honest I am doing this to get a good idea of how long it would take to do this for real ( without any extra work to inhibit me).

So I made a plan of action, ready to follow as the weeks go by.
